Because of the rise of J.J. Abrams and the success of Misplaced, a big nook of style fiction has been in thrall to the “thriller field.” As Abrams said during that now-infamous TED Talk again in 2007, the thought of a thriller field represents “infinite risk.” It’s an attractive premise: any reader or viewer is of course compelled by the necessity to know what could be in a closed field, letting their creativeness run wild with the potential.
